Behind The Scenes: Back From The Brink

“Back from the Brink is one of the most ambitious conservation projects ever undertaken.

Its aim – to save 20 species from extinction and benefit over 200 more through 19 projects that span England; from the tip of Cornwall to Northumberland.”.

At the beginning of Spring 2019 I was approached by conservation photojournalist Neil Aldridge to help out on a commission he had been asked to do. I was fresh out of University and looking for my path into the filmmaking industry - It’s safe to say I jumped at the chance! Although it was an incredible experience and insight into the ‘real working world’, the selling point was a chance to inform a nation on the importance of our wildlife and meet the most inspiring people along the way.

The project: to document the threatened species being saved from extinction and the incredible work being carried out by 8 conservation charities (listed below).

Neil gathered a small team of freshly graduated students, a few experts and a truck load of coffee to produce this project. Many LONG drives, early mornings, late nights, laughs, stresses, amazing memories and questionable pieces of footage that hopefully never see the light of day, later… and 25 films have been produced.

I had the pleasure of working as a second camera operator and production assistant, as well as dabbling in some sound recording.

I could tell endless stories about this experience; looking like a lunatic running after rabbits in an empty field, Neil plunging head first into ponds and sitting in lonely car parks hoping the boy racers weren’t around the corner... But I'd rather keep the focus on why this project is so important.

Each species and habitat have their role to play, further benefitting over 200 species... without them? Well lets hope it doesn't come to that. The incredible people behind the scenes are tirelessly working to secure their future, in turn making England a more diverse and nature rich country which will benefit the land, people and species that call it home.

Please watch and share the message so that you too can be a part of saving England’s most threatened species. How amazing would that be?

I will be forever grateful for the experience this has provided and I can’t wait to continue on the path of informing and inspiring people about the natural world.
